How to plan for early retirement?

I want to retire in 20 years at age 55. I contribute 25% of my salary to company 401(k). What strategy should I employ to save enough to cover the 4 1/2 years so I do not have to withdraw early from IRAs. Reduce contr. to 401 and invest in taxable mutual funds? Assume I do not have money available above and beyond the 25% of salary.

My parents have reached their retirement age and are planning on buying a home in California. What percentage of their savings should go to the downpayment? They want to maximize the downpayment so that their monthly payment can be easily covered by their Social Security and pention. But I worry that they won’t have enough investment in other areas and will be short on the rainy-day funds. Please help!
Not that I didn’t try…. Grandparents always want to stay close to the grandkids. My husband and I are probably going to be in Ca long-term so that makes it impossible to convince my parents to consider other states. They are not millionairs and they are not going to invest in real estate. Just want to get themselves a place to live and still have some extra money for day to day spending.

Why do insurance companies buy pension funds from companies? How do they make money taking the pension plan off the company’s hand?

Does the company offering the pension plan pay anything to the insurance company to take the liability off their hands?

Is anyone else worried about retirement planning?

I am young, but I am always told if you invest $X each month for so many years at 8% average return then you will have enough to retire. I’ve been contributing 12% of my income to my 401(k) since I was 23 and as of right now I have lost money. Are those models going out the window with the economy in the crapper? It is starting to worry me since I’m not counting on SS being there when I retire.

What is a good gift for my retiring piano teacher?

My piano teacher is retiring this year (she’s a college piano teacher), and I’ve had her as my piano teacher for 4 years. I’m heading off to college this fall as well, so I really wanna get her a gift that expresses my appreciation for her, because she’s been very instrumental in my development and love for classical music. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks!

This farm was owned by my Granny’s husband before they married. They created a living trust and the farm became part of the trust. He has passed on and Granny is looking to sell. I need to understand the tax consequences.

I have a long way to go, and I’m putting a great sum of money in my retirement fund, which my company matches up to 5%. My question is once I can dip into my retirement fund, where to I place my money?
