I am 24, and don’t have much money saved yet. I am worried that when I get older, I won’t have saved enough money to live off. My college Professor told us that we should have already gotten started saving up money for retirement. I’m very good at budgeting, paying bills on time, and handling money….but I just have not done well as far as my savings go, and don’t feel like I have enough saved. Have I waited too late? What can I do to jump start my savings?

We’re looking to buy vacation property in Florida and I would like to know what areas of Florida have been hit hardest for real estate. We will be looking in beach communities I believe but want to know where the weakest areas are for real estate before we start looking. We’re from the North and don’t have a clue.

We were married in Jamaica this past week and received a document: Certified Copy of Marriage Register. Our official Marriage Certificate will come via snail mail in a few months. My husband is in the US Marines and we are not sure if I can get my military ID (begin receiving health benefits, etc.) with this document.

We will call base in the am but in the mean time just wondering if anyone knows?

Thanks in advance.
…to clarify…i want to know if i can receive benefits immediately with this document without waiting several months for the Certificate to arrive.

My Cousin just won 32000K…Advice?

I want to help him make a smart decision. And really do not want to give him poor advice. I just read awhile back in either money or some similar publication that there are some high yield savings accounts that beat out rates on current money markets and cd’s I was thinking of offering up that as a suggestion. But because he is young and not great at managing money or keeping it I was thinking maybe a cd would be his best bet. Also an IRA may be a good idea? Maybe make a years contribution to an IRA then put 6 months of living expenses into a money market then invest the rest into a CD? He also has about 8k in debt on his car. Also what should he put aside for taxes? Hes a bar tender so I’m assuming he is in a lower income tax bracket.
He did ask for advice I wouldn’t offer it if I wasn’t asked.

Where to Invest for Retirement?

Hello,

Im 20 years old and plan to invest in Roth IRAs very soon, as well as opening up a 401K with my company. However, Roth IRAs and 401ks, from my understanding, penalize you if you pull out money before youre 59. I intend on retiring at 40. Where should i pool in my money if i dont want to be penalized? Should i start learning the ropes of the Stock Market, or is there a different Retirement plan i can look into?

Thank-you!

Why are stock options not traded for some months?

As an example, QCOM has no options for May, June, Nov and Dec. HPQ has it for May but not for June and July.

I work a full time job. I pay 9% of my income into a 403B. I have 3 credit cards. I am getting ready to pay off my car. I have about 2K in I bonds, and a whole lot more in my retirement savings. My home is paid for. I would like to get a loan to make some repairs and get some siding and a new roof.
I watched the news when the feds dropped the intrest rated a whole 1/2 % and everyone was oohing and aahing over it. I just dont get what that means to me. Can you please tell me what it means to an average jo here in america?

Question on retirement planning – my parents?

My parents have asked me to help advise them on their retirement planning. They have set a tentative target date as June 2011. My mom will be 62 and my dad will be 64. They earn between – 60 K, together, per year.

My mom’s pension will pay ,200 per year. Between my dad’s 401(K) and their IRAs, they have about 120K saved. I’m guessing SS payments of about 24K per year. They also own 200 acres of farm land that they rent out. After property taxes and some land improvement expenses, they net about k per year on the land rental.

I’ve figured that on their 401(k) and IRAs that if they withdraw ,200 per year, and assume 5% growth, those funds will last 32 years before they are exhausted (bringing my mom to age 94, and dad to age 96).

So … that comes to a yearly total retirement income of ,400. After state and federal taxes the net (I think) would be closer to ,200, or about ,700 per month. That’s about 80% of their current income – probably OK to retire on.

Is my thinking right? Any advice?
Assume expenses at an average of ,700 per month or slightly less. My parents don’t live "high on the hog"

House is paid for.
I’m almost certain that they would both retire with medical insurance…I’ll have to ask for sure.
