Percentage of income for savings?

I have always understood that you should budget your income as follows:
1/3 for housing
1/3 fixed expenses, entertainment
1/3 for savings

My question is regarding the savings. How much of that third should be allocated for retirement vs. how much for vacation, unforeseen expenditures etc. I live in California so the 1/3 for housing in non negotiable,

"Professional" experience appreciated.

My mother is very ill and stricken with bone cancer. She is a few years shy of both social security retirement and her Teacher’s pension retirement age. However, according to her Union President she can take a state funded Disability Retirement Pension, (which is not affected if she also chooses to take social security benefits.) According to the Social Security and Disability website her condition is listed as one that would qualify her for a quick enrollment into the social security disability program. However, would collecting her pension disqualify her from social security benefits? Being that she is taking her pension early and changing to a state funded health plan it is a drastic drop in income for her.

What departments can I contact at the social security administration for how pension pay-outs affect social security disability income?

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

If you did not get one maybe you were not worth it, or you negotiated poorly. I did not get one on some of my jobs so I saved appropriately but these people saved for retirement based on the guarantees they were given by their employer.

Bob Channin, the NEA’s top lawyer said in his retirement speech:

“Despite what some among us would like to believe it is not because of our creative ideas. It is not because of the merit of our positions. It is not because we care about children and it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power.”

“And we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues each year, because they believe that we are the unions that can most effectively represent them, the unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees.”

“This is not to say that the concern of NEA and its affiliates with closing achievement gaps, reducing dropout rates, improving teacher quality and the like are unimportant or inappropriate. To the contrary. These are the goals that guide the work we do. But they need not and must not be achieved at the expense of due process, employee rights and collective bargaining. That simply is too high a price to pay.”
You can see the video here: http://nation.foxnews.com/culture/2011/02/23/teachers-union-big-wig-says-its-not-about-kids-its-about-power

Of course there will be all of those deniers that say since it’s on Fox it didn’t really happen. But video is video, wherever it comes from.

I’ve tried to find a number to file a complain against a Medicare representative who was rude and hung up on me. Does anyone know how to contact Medicare with an employee complaint?

I am a Secondary High school teacher from the State of California with retirement benefits provided by CalSTRS based on a certificated salary schedule with years of district experience and professional growth.
If I decide to change and take a teaching position in a Community College or a University (UC or Cal State in California) or a job in education in a government agency like USAID for example, will I get a full transfer of my retirement benefits within their own retirement system or not?

I make about an hr. I am fully vested at my job and my employer matches me up to so much of a percentage. The Lincoln financial group gave me 3 options, high, low and medium risk investments. I figure I am 42 years old and have about 20 yrs before I retire, so I signed up for the high risk option. Is Lincoln Financial reputable? Should I keep putting money into this thing? What happens when I am 65 and want it back? What happens if I poop out and and decide I want to retire at 55?
PS: I am not retarded, I am a college graduate and work in a totally different field. I am pretty much a financial idiot. I bet you would be surprised.
