Can I use my social security number after surrendering my US Greencard?

When I surrendered my greencard a few years back, the officer did not take my social security card. Does that mean I am allowed to use the social security number allocated to me?

You can use it for every purpose except for employment (unless you obtain a new visa that allows you to work).
When you surrendered your green card, you abandoned your resident status in the U.S. You no longer can enjoy whatever privileges and rights that are attached to lawful permanent resident status you had when you were a permanent resident.
If, someday, you get a visa that allows you to work in the U.S., you can use the same Social Security number to pay taxes, but you cannot use the Social Security card by itself to accept employment in the U.S.

The number is just for you for lifetime. However, without legal status, the number is invalid.
