The more money I put into my 401k, the less I have for a down payment, which means the longer I will have to save. Is the tax advantage really better than buying property?
TMA – That’s a good point, but don’t forget that 401k loans are usually limited to 50% of the vested balance, and that withdrawals for home purchases still incur a 10% penalty (and you have to pay the taxes on the money).

I’ve been contributing to both a 457 and a 401K for a number of years, but noticed that there is a fixed fee with each contribution. I would like to avoid the fee, but am unsure which investment vehicle is best. Married one kid on the way and own a home, but with the baby, a new home is in order.

Switching jobs and due to my personal situation I think I am going to take a lump sum of my 401k rather than roll it over. I have about ,000 in it and would like to use it to help me sell my house once and for all (Have some equity but home values dropped big time). How much of that ,000 can I expect to have in hand once they cut the check? Thanks!!!

I am signing up for my 401k through Transamerica, what is the best one to invest in?
And don’t answer this question if you aren’t going to be of help… I am only looking for assistance in what plans are going to benefit me the best in the long run. I don’t know much about the plans or 401k investments.

I quit my job and the office manager told me i had to wait a year to recieve my 401k. The company did not contribute any money. Is this normal, the office manager has a history of making things difficult for ex employees.

I have 401k’s from previous employers. Would it be better protected from big government "help" if it were moved to an IRA or Roth IRA, or just take it out with today’s tax hit and penalties and invest somewhere? I’m concerned that the future government may "share the wealth" in a way that punishes me for saving in my 401k.

I have been placed on SS Disability and cannot afford my mortgage. I would like to move south. If I pull my 401k I can get a house real cheap. Then I would like to file bankruptcy on my house here. I would not like to be homeless for a few months. I still have decent credit for now but the funds are going to start dropping quick. Anyone have Ideas on how to do this?

Around age 70 you have to start withdrawing a percent of your 401K. Are taxes withheld before you receive your check or at the end of the tax year. Also what percent do you have to withdraw? Thank you!

Like most, my 401k has really suffered this last year. Outside of that I lost my job so my employer is no longer contributing. Since I am losing money, is it a good idea to just take the money and pay off all my credit card debt I acquired while out of work for 6 months? I am 45 years old with an 11 year old son. I started working again but it’s through a temp agency. Just sick of paying 0 per month on credit cards!

I am 24 years old and I just became eligible at my job to start contributing to a 401K. My dad and others say it is good to start young and pick a slightly agressive fund. My girlfriend thinks its a bad idea because you can lose money. I think it is a good idea to start investing for retirment. But what does everyone else think?

When I was laid off I let my 401k loan take 00 out of the account to pay off a 401k loan. They told me I would have to pay tax and penalty on it, but they didn’t say how much. So, anyone with tax knowledge? About how much must I pay on that when I go to H&R Block?
