If it has to go over a separate rollover account, can the rollover and the traditional IRA then be merged into one account?
Yirmiyah- So that tells me that if I rollover the 401k that I wouldn’t want to merge the traditional with the rollover. Probably couldn’t anyway. Rollover sounds much better

I transfered money into a rollover IRA from a 401k but it’s just sitting there. How can i make it grow or how can I use it?

If I’m planning to retire early (45-50), is it better for me to max out my 401k now and pay the 10% penalty when I begin withdrawing early? Or is it better to invest the extra money in a taxable brokerage account that won’t charge penalties upon withdrawal?

I have a Roth IRA, which I max out every year including this year. I also have an old 401K with a previous employer. I read that I can’t roll over the 401K into my Roth, but can I roll it over into a new Traditional IRA when I already have an existing Roth IRA?

There seem to tax benefits in 2010 for putting money into a traditional IRA that I can later roll into a roth IRA. So, can I take the 401K that I have with a former employer and roll it into both a 401K with my new employer, and deduct 4,000 of that to put into a traditional IRA? Thanks so much for your help!!
Sorry, to clarify….can I roll over into both of them? Like most of the money into a 401K and some of the money into the traditional IRA?

I have some money to invest that was pulled out of a profit sharing 401k. And I want to know my options. Possibly invest in socially responsible stocks like green technology.
What kind of things should I ask when researching them or look for?

I heard 401K’s & Roth IRA’s are the only 2 things the government does NOT consider when determining how much money i get for financial aide.
How would i go about getting one? Is there a minimum balance? Do i need to be employed through a company to open one? Is there penalties? Please be as specific as possible. Thanks
I am 20 years old, looking to start an emergency savings
Or a retirement savings, whichever
whats a money market account?

I have a 401k with my current employer but am leaving to a new employer and they don’t have a 401k. I am thinking of rolling my 401k into either a Roth or Traditional IRA… but dunno which is best. I know traditional IRA distributions are taxable and can only start taking them after 59 1/2 without penalty, im not too sure about Roths. For further info, I am still young (in my twenties).
Which should I do?

I understand when short selling a home that banks will try to find other cash assets of mine to help offset costs. Are they allowed to touch my 401K or ESOP or IRA’s? This is one of my investment/rental properties. I have another one. Is that other home protected from the lender? What about tax implications? Thanks.

I’m retired and rolled over my 401K to an IRA, but I’ve had to take out over 0,000 in a year. What will be my penalty?

And, how would opening one impact how much I can save in my traditional 401k and in my Roth IRA?
So, if I currently contribute K annually to my 401k and K annually to my Roth IRA, I would have to cut back on my contributions, but to which one? The 401k or the Roth IRA? Or are there "Self Directed" versions of both?

I am 20 and would like to start a retirement plan. My current job does not offer a 401k. Is a roth IRA the best way yo go for someone my age? What is an Average expected rate of return on an IRA, what is considered a good rate?

I’m only 26 and I think it’s time for me to start saving for my retirement now. I work at a job who doesn’t provide a 401k to their employees. I don’t plan on working there forever but right now it’s hard to get a new job. I live in San Diego, CA where the work force is very competitive. Any suggestions on the best IRA rates in my city. Currently, I bank with a credit union.

My wife and I contribute a good amount of money into our 401K’s and have increased as of March due to the stock market decline. We also have a good amount already in our nest egg and a good amount of equity in our home (about 70%). As the market has been on a decline, we have decided to start investing in stocks (for the long term; about 20 years) with our extra money. So, is this a good idea to build up extra income a ways off? I am trying to follow the Graham approach to investing-long term; value investing strategy. Is this a good methodology or is there something better?
