Given the current status of the economy and the crooks at Wall St, is 401k still the safest way to prepare for retirement? Is your 401k affected by the messed up economy and manipulated stock market?

What would be good to look at or invest in.
I have always hear if you have a lot of options in a 401K, always invest in some sort of international fund, etc.
Any suggestions.
Thanks.

I just graduated and I am 21 years old. I will be interning at a company for 6 months (or until the lift their hiring freeze) and I will likely begin permanent employment for the same company at the beginning of next year. I will not likely set up a 401K until I start the permanent employment. The internship still pays pretty well (around / hour) so how much of my paycheck should I put towards retirement?

He has two rental properties that are for "our" retirement. He chose his cousins as the beneficiaries because they are on welfare and he says they seem to need the houses most.
He is just my fiance we aren’t married yet so maybe that should be factored in here. Maybe when we get married he’ll put them in my name. He got really angry when I talked to him about my concerns. I am not after his money. I just want to know I will be secure in my old age or sooner if my "husband" were to unfortunately die (I hope doesn’t happen).
I want to know we are working towards a future together, building a nest egg, going through life together. This just doesn’t seem right to me. Should I be bothered?
I do work full time and have a 401k and 1 investment property of my own. Maybe he thinks I don’t need it. What we have kids? (He got angry when I said that. He said "when we do I’ll change it") I guess my concerns are he isn’t working towards a "WE" but a "HE" as if he is still single. Maybe I am wrong. What do you think?

Me and my husband are 28. I am "savings/retirement" challenged! I know nothing. What would be the best option(s) for us? Currently we put 0/month into regular savings account and 0/month into the 457. My work also puts in 2% of my wage into a 401K.
Should we do things differently?

I am a teacher with a pension and my husband a 401k. When we retire how does our retirement get paid out? Is it monthly? Biweekly? Or do we get it one lump sum? Can we decide how it’s paid out? How is it decided how much you get per check?
We’re in our late 20′s so we obviously have decades before this happens, but we were curious how it work.

I finally have a steady job and I need to know which is better because I need to plan for my future. I know a roth takes the taxes out only one time but with a 401k the money that you earn a portion will be taken out and put in the 401. I don’t know what to do?

I’m 53 years old health care professional in a secure job market making around 0,000 plus benefits.
I have about a million dollars saved up in my IRA, SEP-IRA, 401K, and regular savings account.
My house worth about 0,000 is payed off and I have no dependents. I divorced a long time ago.
My mother who is 80 and my brother who is disabled lives with me. They both collect Social Security and have good health benefits, and are in good health.
Am I doing well compared to rest of the households in our country?

Basically I want to know if there are any requirements (eg: salary maximum, etc) to being able to contribute to both a roth IRA and a 401k (or in my case a 403b). I’ve heard that once you reach a certain salary you can either contribute to a pre-tax OR a roth but not both.

I am 19 and met with a financial adviser to try and start on a retirement plan. He strongly recommended that i go with a VUL. He wants me to invest ,000 up front and then make monthly deposits. I did some research on it but im skeptical. Is this a good retirement/life insurance plan? Or should i go with a 401k or another option?

My company offers 401K investment matching up to 6%, I get to pick from various-risk investments of where I want my 401K to end up.
Should I go with that, or should I look into a Roth IRA or some form of personal investment?

I am planning retirement from my current employer @ 55 with a defined pension. My 401K is small but big enough for a down payment on my retirement home after relocation. I will be starting employment with a new employer so I will be able to replenish my 401 with the new employer. As I understand it right now, if I "cash out" on my 401K, I will be subject to 10% penalty & 20% taxes. Is there anyway to avoid throwing 30% out the window?

I’m a 63yo retired man. I opened a traditional IRA and rolled over my 401k. Does that satisfy my yearly IRA contribution for tax purposes?
Thank you.
