I am 19, with about 2 years of university left, debt free so far. I am proud of my financial situation. My goal is to graduate debt free as well, and I am on course to do that. My major is in International Affairs. Yes I know this isn’t exactly a field that is in high demand but it appeals to my interests and I enjoy the subject.
I’m realistic, I am aware of the the economic situation. I don’t have high expectations of my employment opportunities/pay after graduation. I expect no higher and probably not much less than ,000 a year after hopefully gaining employment. But I’d like to have means of using this money to in turn make more money. I always have my parents to turn to for advice, but I’d like outside advice as well.
I’d like to set up an IRA and a 401k once I start a career. I’d also like to invest a safe, reasonable amount in the stock market. I am a dual citizen, Canada/US, and I was thinking about investing some of that money into a mutual fund here in Canada as well. I’d like to keep things diverse.
I’m am looking for some advice about what steps I should take while I’m young to make sure I am financially secure and prosperous.
What should I do while I’m young to protect my financial well being? Thanks in advance.
