My husband and I are approaching our 30′s, self-employed with no retirement plan. We quit our jobs 1 and 2 years ago when the business we started proved successful.
We total about -60k/yr before taxes. We live in NJ and live paycheck to paycheck for now and have a year’s income in credit card debt that’s from the year we started the business and made little money (interest rates 8-12%).
I have a few thousand sitting in a pension account from my old teaching job, and he has some sitting in a 401k, they’re both waiting to be moved.
I’m a smart business woman, but I’m terribly uneducated on retirement (riding those 20′s). I’ve been more focused on income growth and credit paydown, but as 30 approaches I’m reminded that it’s important to start retirement plans early.
Can someone offer unbiased advice to get me started?
