Retirement plans for young people?

I am 20 and would like to start a retirement plan. My current job does not offer a 401k. Is a roth IRA the best way yo go for someone my age? What is an Average expected rate of return on an IRA, what is considered a good rate?

I’m out of work right now. I’m 58 years old and no employer will even look at me because of my age. How dose the government think people in my situation will support themselves? I notice that the senators and congressman don’t talk about cutting their retirement plan and their using OUR money for their plan which gives them a full salary after serving ONE term.
Curtis 1911. I’m a republician. I’ve applied at wal mart and Mc Donalds and as a school bus driver. No interviews just rejection notice in the mail if I’m lucky. So…..YOU sir talk like a man with a paper ass.

I contributed ,000 towards a retirement plan at Conseco Insurance Company, and need to withdraw the total amount for a home purchase now. This was an after tax contribution of ,000 that started the retirement account. Now the balance is a little over ,000, and I need to purchase a home and withdraw the entire amount. For tax purposes, how much should I have them withhold for state of michigan taxes and the federal government (IRS) taxes?

You choose not to get health insurance..tough. You choose not to invest in a retirement plan?…..tough. You get fired and never saved money for that ……tough. This is the real world.
I am a joke for suggesting people plan for their future. I know. What a moron I am.

I have a retirement plan with my former employer and I want to roll it over to a traditional IRA. What are my other options?

I am going to start taking yearly withdrawals from my E.S.O.P retirement plan from my old employer. Not sure how many years I will spread it out over. I wanted to know what the percentage of taxes I would be paying. I am 54 years old.

We give all kind of meaningful tax breaks to the very wealthy in this country but cannot seem to give a break to the working stiff who worked all their lives to accrue this small benefit. I think congress should consider special tax rates on this income.
I’m not talking about the 401K Plan. I’m talking about the Retirement Plan the company offers.

Variable Universal Life Insurance (VUL)?

I am 19 and met with a financial adviser to try and start on a retirement plan. He strongly recommended that i go with a VUL. He wants me to invest ,000 up front and then make monthly deposits. I did some research on it but im skeptical. Is this a good retirement/life insurance plan? Or should i go with a 401k or another option?

Shouldn’t we be responsible for our own retirement savings?….Why are we forced to contribute to a govt. run retirement plan like Social Security when we could be putting that money into a more lucrative retirement investment….?
@Christopher….I sympathize entirely with your situation…I know you have contributed and therefore you do deserve your check. I am simply saying that the program eventually needs to be eliminated, and people need to be given the freedom to keep the money they earn instead of being forced to contribute to a collective retirement fund… Those who have already contributed are indeed entitled to compensation…

IRA Investments develops a retirement program for you on your 30th birthday. You plan to retire on your 60th birthday and want to establish a plan that will require equal annual end-of-year installments into a retirement account. The first deposit is made one year from now and the final payment on your 60th birthday. The retirement plan will allow you to withdraw 75,000 per year for 15 years with the first withdrawal on your 61st birthday. Also, at the end of the 5th year you wish to withdraw an additional 0,000. The retirement account promises to earn 10% annually. What equal annual payment must be made to achieve your investment objective?

My husband and I are approaching our 30′s, self-employed with no retirement plan. We quit our jobs 1 and 2 years ago when the business we started proved successful.

We total about -60k/yr before taxes. We live in NJ and live paycheck to paycheck for now and have a year’s income in credit card debt that’s from the year we started the business and made little money (interest rates 8-12%).

I have a few thousand sitting in a pension account from my old teaching job, and he has some sitting in a 401k, they’re both waiting to be moved.

I’m a smart business woman, but I’m terribly uneducated on retirement (riding those 20′s). I’ve been more focused on income growth and credit paydown, but as 30 approaches I’m reminded that it’s important to start retirement plans early.

Can someone offer unbiased advice to get me started?

I am amazed at the things being taught in college these days. Socialism failed and it failed big time. Why are colleges teaching this crap? Don’t these colleges realize that they are polluting the adolescents minds?
@shovel ready- Exactly I lost a lot of money leaving my retirement plan in my employers hands. I have learned my lesson. It is way better in my hands where I can move it where it would fit me best.

And if people were given a choice, do you most people would be responsible and actually buy things like medical insurance, disability insurance, unemployment insurance, and invest in a retirement plan (in lieu of social seurity, state disability, state unemployment, etc)?
To clarify, I mean company benefits along with government benefits.

I have stopped participating in my company’s 401K plan but still need a retirement plan and one with annual tax benefits. Any suggestions? I’ve got about 10-12 more years before retirement.
