How would an ex-pat save for retirement?

I would like to know what’s the best way to save for retirement if you are in your 20s and do not plan on living in the US for much longer? I know that social security is not going to be around for my generation so I would not count on that even if I was staying in the US. I plan on leaving the US in about 3-5 years. All of the other ideas for retirement savings involves things such as 401Ks and annuities and other things that are for people based in the US.

Are there any global plans for those of us who refuse to be tethered down by one government? I am good with saving money….that is not the problem. I just don’t want to end up with money under a mattress or in some fly by night bank in the Bahamas that goes bust. Thanks for your help.

P.S. Costa Rica and the Netherlands are places that I find interesting.

Will he address their concerns about over regulation, the environment and taxes?
Will his plan lead to near term increased hiring and growth?
Will his plan fall flat?

Your opinion: Will our 401Ks, IRAs and Retirement savings rise, sink more or stabilize?

Can someone please explain what a ROTH IRA is?

I heard 401K’s & Roth IRA’s are the only 2 things the government does NOT consider when determining how much money i get for financial aide.

How would i go about getting one? Is there a minimum balance? Do i need to be employed through a company to open one? Is there penalties? Please be as specific as possible. Thanks
I am 20 years old, looking to start an emergency savings
Or a retirement savings, whichever

How in the world can I retire?

I’m 24 years old I just started my professional career and I make about 47K currently. Whenever I use any retirement calculator, they always tell me that it’ll be almost virtually impossible for me to retire at a reasonable age when I get old. I don’t come from a rich family, I’m dirt poor and I have nothing but a thousand dollars to my name (coupled with 40K in student debt)

I often hear how everyone should have this much money in retirement savings, this much in emergency savings, etc. but how in the world does someone coming from my position accomplish all of these things. I obviously need a huge boost in pay, but 48K is rather decent and I do live within my means and I’m a very frugal person. Once I get situated I anticipate that I’ll be able to save at least 0 a month, but of course that’s still not enough. Can anyone please help??? I know in due time my income will increase, and I’m able to pay for all my living expenses and will probably become a homeowner, but how in the world do some people my age or younger have such large savings already? Did my parents screw me?

Aldo wants to convert his 0 000 retirement savings fund into an income fund. With the first option, Aldo would receive semi-annual payments, with interest calculated at 5.1% per year, compounded semi annually. With the second option, he would receive monthly payments, with interest calculated at 5.2%
per year cmpunded monthly. On either option, Aldo wants the income fund to provide income for 20 years

a) Calculate the total value of the payments for each income fund option.
b) Which payment option yields the highest annual income?

Shouldn’t we be responsible for our own retirement savings?….Why are we forced to contribute to a govt. run retirement plan like Social Security when we could be putting that money into a more lucrative retirement investment….?
@Christopher….I sympathize entirely with your situation…I know you have contributed and therefore you do deserve your check. I am simply saying that the program eventually needs to be eliminated, and people need to be given the freedom to keep the money they earn instead of being forced to contribute to a collective retirement fund… Those who have already contributed are indeed entitled to compensation…

Many Americans (including myself) cannot afford individual health insurance, even if they could qualify for it, . I’m a member of the "working poor", barely taking home enough money for rent, food, utilites and gas. If I was to get seriously ill or injured, what would happen to my savings? Would I be forced to spend all my retirement savings to pay for my medical bills or what is the drill for a worst-case scenario like this?

It is scary because I’m now like 30 and nowhere near that and had worked, but I know this goes without saying….

Most homeless people on the street begging for change obviously have like ,000, ,000, or 0,000 in retirement savings…or even 0,000

the reason they are starving and begging for cash is in order not to withdraw this money they are very cash poor and can barely make ends meet…. but why don’t we credit the homeless people at least give them merit for their retirement savings?

They are doing better than me.
It is sad it took me so long in life to learn that when people count their pennies, that doesn’t include that they have retirement savings.

Even Ethiopian immigrants who sweep floors and earn minimum wage have like 0,000 in retirement on average.
well one woman is still my friend and she could barely speak English and lived in a homeless shelter, but she had 0,000.00 in after-tax savings. This because she managed to save.
And I give homeless people a lot of credit for this because even when they rob for cash they are still man enough not to deplete their savings accounts.
EDIT: I know most homeless people (OUTSIDE OF THEIR RETIREMENT SAVINGS) don’t have a penny to their name.
I’m talking about WITH RETIREMENT in 401K COUNTED IN!!!! What don’t you understand?
obviously retirement savings is deferred, it’s not net worth. But for purposes of this question, please address the retirement savings as if it’s real. That’s what I’m getting at in this question

Shoud I get out of my target retirement fund?

I have a bulk of my retirement savings in Vanguard Target Retirement 2020.

I feel like I have no control over how much is in bonds and how much in stocks.

With the impending interest rate rise, I’m getting scared that funds would go down even if stocks keeps going up.

Should I worry? Do the fund managers consider stuff like interest rates and inflation in these funds or is it just computerized?

Thanks for blowing my cover John… Why don’t you just take out a billboard saying "ULTRASTOOGE IS ABOUT TO EMBEZZLE THE CHURCH’S FUNDS YET AGAIN!"
