My employers and myself have paid for social security and medicare benefits, why then "entitlement"? The government owes contributors these benefits. Compared to all the money the citizens pay in for congress’ and the senate’s retirement (which we did not get to vote on), I should receive my social security just as the political employees of this country receive theirs.
With the 9 digit social security number, there are only 100 million combination and nearly 300 million US residents. That DOES not count everyone who has been issued a number and has died in the last 80 years. So how do you know your number is original to only you?
I did a retirement calculator.
No comment as to the numbers of how much I need to save – we could never do that.
So social security will have to be there.
Will it be?
I would like to retire at 40K a year, but there is no way we could save that on our own. Simply no way. We would have to live in a cardboard box and ride bicycles.
Do you think ss will be around for younger people that have anything in savings?
What if we reach a goal of 30K a year for our retirement years (without ss).
Do you think the feds would consider us wealthy and not give us ss benefits?

I live in Illinois, and the closed Social Security office is in 30min away from me, in Indiana though. Since Social Security is Federal I can go there correct? The closest one in Illinois to me is about an hour a way.
I recently received my social security number, (about 2 months ago) I then applied for employment I quickly was offered a job. After the employer did the background check I received a letter saying that they were unable to offer me the employment. The report stated that my ssn has never been issued, and it was unable to be validated. What can i do to get this problem fixed so it wont cause this with future employers? Thank you for you time.
If a person takes their SS early for whatever reason and works, they have for every they earn over ,180 taken out of their SS. Why not encourage older workers, no matter when they drew Social Security, to work as much as they want? It would be a win win. Their wages would be taxed therefore adding to the Social security fund and they could have a better quality of life due to more income.
I work at a gov’t hospital in Texas (you can guess which one) and was curious if the reduction for Social Security means that the amount that I will be paying into the Retirement Income Plan will be reduced as well? Currently I put in 4.5 and my employer 1.7 to make the 6.2. Since it’s 4.2 now will I pay less?

I would like to know what’s the best way to save for retirement if you are in your 20s and do not plan on living in the US for much longer? I know that social security is not going to be around for my generation so I would not count on that even if I was staying in the US. I plan on leaving the US in about 3-5 years. All of the other ideas for retirement savings involves things such as 401Ks and annuities and other things that are for people based in the US.
Are there any global plans for those of us who refuse to be tethered down by one government? I am good with saving money….that is not the problem. I just don’t want to end up with money under a mattress or in some fly by night bank in the Bahamas that goes bust. Thanks for your help.
P.S. Costa Rica and the Netherlands are places that I find interesting.
Would they have pensions, Social Security, and Medicare?
Would they be able to survive being retired without a job and no source of income?
Or would the for-profit private companies take care of seniors, despite having no profit motive to do so?
Why do they want to take it away why can’t they take away welfare instead of awarding mothers for being pregnant it doesn’t seem fair to take social security away for the disabled does it?
if a person at age 65 wants to retire but doesn’t have enough saved up for their house or whatever… is there places they can go such as retirement communities or whatever where they can live off of their social security alone?
I understand that people are living longer, but there some people who pay into Social Security but do not live long enough to collect what they paid into the system. If we raise the retirement age to 70, we will also have a lot more seniors driving on the roads and highways out of necessity, which I think is dangerous in itself.
